There were some other similar cases such as in Ethiopia. However, because of the absence of the need for an independent review of this category, a number of groups have raised questions about the inclusion of the following children in the evaluation:
Children ages five to 18 years with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Children with Tourette’s syndrome or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who were diagnosed as having autism and without an ASD diagnosis in a clinical study.
Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), especially in families with children with autism, in African countries.
Some children in poverty-stricken families experienced significant distress and emotional support, but did not have this support as a consequence of an ASD diagnosis.
In summary:
On April 17, 2013, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that three persons were hospitalized in Uganda for suspected autism.
Four people were hospitalized in Uganda for diagnosed ASD.
Two people were hospitalized for suspected ASD.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is developing a nationwide autism evaluation in Uganda that will include at least 3,000 kids ages 5 to 18 years as of May 5, 2014.
