Chad, 18, works at the same local hospital as Nadhim and his brother, who have a disability, and are unable to care for their son. “I’ve always loved to talk with patients, learn about their life-changing issues,” he says. “When I can’t, I ask for support. The money that I’m putting toward our family will be used to help the families with serious psychological issues.” In the past year Chad’s brother has found help at many hospitals in this part of Kenya. However he has found that the support comes at a cost, as there are no doctors or dentists who can take him to their own clinic or hospital. On the other hand, Nadhim still carries around a pacemaker that works on his hand, sometimes with extreme pain as a result of his disability. “People look for alternatives,” he says. “Sometimes they even ask for my help.”
