Sony Smart Wireless Headset Overview

Sony Smart Wireless Headset Overview

Probably the most functional stereo headset on the market: it has a built-in radio, can work as an MP3 player and play music from a memory card, and that's just the beginning!

Design, construction

The packaging here is such that immediately after removing the gadget, you can throw it away, it is not possible to assemble it back under any circumstances. As you can see, there are a lot of interesting things in the kit, if you have a question why there is a memory card here, I will immediately answer – the headset can work like a regular MP3 player with all the ensuing consequences. They took care of everything, even put in the box a branded card reader, familiar from the days of Sony Ericsson.

The headset itself is small and least of all resembles a headset, it looks more like a player, both in size and shape. A small rectangular box with a "crocodile" for attaching to clothes on the back. The assembly is good, the dimensions are 6 x 2.5 x 0.8 cm, weight is about 18 grams. At the end there is a 3.5 mm jack, you can connect any headphones, although they are quite good in the kit. Nearby is a microphone hole. As you can see, the design is reminiscent of old Sony headsets like the DR-BT10CX and others, the body is made of black glossy plastic, with a gray plastic part on top. It can be removed, there is a slot for a memory card and a microUSB connector.

The headset is available only in black, as far as I understand, there will be no white version. In general, it seems that the Smart Wireless Headset (hereinafter referred to as SWH) will not linger on the market, a very niche accessory for fans and sympathizers. Below I will explain why.

There is a small display on the front, which is almost invisible when turned off. Everything is in order with the assembly, only the cap sits painfully loose, I accidentally removed it several times. Well, at least it is attached to the body with a strip of plastic.

I also want to remind you that a long time ago, in 2003, Sony Ericsson had a headset HBM-30, we can say that SWH is its continuation. The HBM-30 also had a player function, a 64 MB memory card was included (!). Small display, number identification, the ability to replace headphones.

In fact, ten years have passed. There is no longer Sony Ericsson, but the achievements of engineers and designers are still used. By the way, the HBM-30 can still be found on sale, fortunately, there is no built-in battery, the gadget was powered by one AAA battery. I used HBM-30 paired with Sony Ericsson P910.

Management

Next to the display is a multifunctional button, with its help you can answer or end a call, open incoming text messages, works only with gadgets based on Android. At the end there is a volume rocker, power buttons, playback controls, there is also a return button – you need it while moving through the menu.

Fast-forwarding is rather slow than fast-forward, and for long tracks, jumping to the desired section is a real pain.

The claimed operating time is 11 hours for listening to the radio, using for conversations, in the mode of playing music from a memory card – about 12 hours. For charging, a microUSB connector is used, you need to remove the cap, the kit includes both a USB cable and a charger. It is curious that a piece of paper has been attached to the cable since the days of Sony Ericsson. A sort of artifact from the past.

The operating time is quite acceptable for such a device, I have nothing to complain about.

To move around the menu, the playback control buttons and the back button are used, I will try to explain how and what happens here:

  • In the settings, you can view connected devices, flip the display, change the language, brightness, system information
  • Music, here you can go to the memory card or connected device, you can set the Shuffle mode for the card, view playlists, artists, tracks, albums.
  • A separate menu item is FM radio, frequency names are visible, RDS is supported, you can use the player control buttons to fully control the radio (there is both automatic and manual search)
  • It is possible to mute the microphone during a call by pressing and holding the Play button during a call
  • It is possible to connect to two devices at the same time
  • When connected to an Android device, you can view the call log, select a number (contact, names are displayed) and make a call, in fact, the headset acts as a miniature phone
  • On the headset screen, event notifications can be displayed, these are SMS, email and reminders from the calendar, and this information can also be viewed
  • I strongly advise you to install the LiveWare program on your Android smartphone (this is a Sony program, but it works on any device), because SWH can also be used to view notifications from Facebook, Twitter, you can change the parameters associated with this function in the program
  • Supports text-to-speech function, you need to install LiveWare, this function works only with Android, you can load new languages
  • The most interesting thing is that you can download new applications – functions for SWH from the Android Market, there is already a program to find the phone (calling on the smartphone is activated)

Memory

This device has a microSD card slot and supports cards up to 32 GB. It is curious that the headset supports software updates, the procedure looks like this:

"Instructions for updating using a micro SD card:

1. Place the smartwirelessheadsetpro.bin file in the root directory of the micro SD card.
2. Reboot your Smart Wireless Headset pro.
3. It will update on startup.

Caller name display – now available on some non-Android phones. – Display the correct time – now also on some non-Android phones. – Improved compatibility with some types of micro SD cards. – Various improvements.

I did all that, the update was successful. Immediately after connecting to the computer, a menu appears where you can activate the file transfer mode, if you do nothing, the device will simply charge.

The included memory card is incredibly slow, or something is wrong with the device. It is better to change and upload files using a card reader.

Phone connection, sound quality

In general, the headset is primarily designed for use with Android devices, but the first thing I tried to connect it to the iPhone. When connecting, you are shown a code, you need to confirm it on the phone and on the headset, a tedious and not entirely clear procedure. The screen in standby mode shows the connection status (the figure means the number of connected devices), time, battery status. After the update, the headset works very well with the iPhone, the track name is displayed, everything is in order with the controls, but, as I wrote above, this gadget was originally created for Android. Voice quality is good, just keep in mind that the device should be held as close to the mouth as possible. The interlocutors are perfectly audible, the volume level is very high. Yes, I note that the Bluetooth 3.0 profile is used here.

But if you want something simpler, then you should definitely look at the Nokia BH-610. Thanks to Sony for a good gadget, but for you, lovers and professionals of toys, I highly recommend buying it. It also doesn't cost too much – and there are also very comfortable headphones with a short cable, perfect to use with your phone when it's in an inside jacket pocket.

What conclusions can be drawn. You can listen to music from a Bluetooth connected phone, you can listen to music from a memory card, you can listen to the radio. The screen displays the name of the subscriber (if it is in the address book), you can use the call lists. Notifications. Widgets. It’s easy to get used to the controls, but then it’s hard to part with this remote control for everything – for example, if you connect SWH to a tablet, it will help you communicate comfortably without taking your gadget out of your bag – while listening to music.

Another question is that sometimes there are slowdowns when moving through the menu, but I did not notice reboots or malfunctions. This gadget, first of all, is addressed to those who like to dig and figure it out, those who, for simplicity, SWH will not understand and will not approve.

Just keep in mind that most of the features will work with Android, you can listen to music in many ways from iPhone, the track name is displayed after flashing, but there are no notifications. During incoming calls, names in Russian replace question marks, everything is displayed correctly in Latin.

Conclusions

This device is not so often found on sale, the price is about 3,400 rubles, it seems to me that the thing turned out to be excellent, especially for those who still have not played enough toys. Listen to music from your phone or from a memory card, use the radio, the display is not for formality, but for full-fledged call management – all this is here. Excellent delivery set. A whole field of activity for an experienced gadget lover, such a thing will come in handy in the office, in the car, and in the gym. Text-to-speech (if you are fluent in English), the ability to install additional applications. In my opinion, these features are unlikely to be highly demanded by the consumer, but when it comes to playing music in a variety of ways, it's great.

But if you want something simpler, then you should definitely look at the Nokia BH-610. Thanks to Sony for a good gadget, but for you, lovers and professionals of toys, I highly recommend buying it. I can only say good things about the music https://cars45.com/listing/toyota/camry/1967. Included are wonderful headphones, perhaps only in Sony and Apple do not hesitate to immediately equip the user with everything necessary. I would not even think about replacing, and they look great, and the sound is wonderful, either when listening to files from a memory card or from a phone. Slightly worse than the Nokia BH-610, no depth. But otherwise – only positive emotions.
